Cost Cutting Recipes

As most of you already by now, I pretty much make everything from scratch. I don't make freezer meals unless what we had for dinner was way too much. I enjoy cooking/planning each meal always trying something new. I do freeze any veggies that look like they are getting tired or fruit that is on sale.

I started out making bread. After reading the ingredients of flour tortillas and corn tortillas I decided to make my own. It takes time with these. My flour tortillas are still not thin enough. Hubby doesn't argue he loves them. Corn tortillas can be tricky sometimes either too wet or too dry. Both tortillas need kneading and resting time. This doesn't deter me I will keep trying to make them only when we need them. Maybe a dozen at a time.

My next adventure is fermentation. I am still waiting for one item I ordered before I get into Kraut. Today I will make fermented dill pickles. Ingredients: water, salt, and pickling cucumbers. I want them dill so I will add some dill and peppercorns. My info is from a blogger/YouTuber Farmhouse On Boone. Fermentation is so good for your gut health. She has 8 children and the older ones have to choose between kraut or pickles with each meal. They choose pickles. Sounds good to me.

Who said retirement had to be dull? We go to town once a month for some groceries and items hubby needs at Home Depot or I need at Hobby Lobby or Joann's mostly to just get out for the day.

Our garden is done except for cucumbers. They are small but good for salads. We purchased our seeds from Johnny Seeds and are planning our fall garden. Hubby needs to build one or more above-ground containers. I will be searching for 10 gal buckets. Finding local topsoil is impossible here. We live in a 495-person town and 30 minutes from any smaller town. Deliveries are an issue sometimes or they cost quite a bit. Home Depot has bulk soil. Who knew?

Okay off to the kitchen to make hubby's brunch. Both of us eat twice a day between 11-6. It seems to work for both of us. Hubby does snack a bit, but I do not.
