Homemade Crackers and Flour Tortillas

I have made another decision on what we eat, or what hubby eats actually.

In order to accomplish all my frugal cooking you need to love to cook. While others travel or take a cruise when retirement we relax in this small town. There is always something to do around the house for hubby and I love to cook and make things.

No more store-bought crackers or tortillas. I know there are some fresh tortillas out there but you pay a price for them. As a frugal wench, I will make my own at a fraction of the cost. Has anyone actually looked at the ingredients of the more popular crackers and tortillas?

Ritz Crackers: 11.8 oz $3.88

INGREDIENTS: UNBLEACHED ENRICHED FLOUR (WHEAT FLOUR, NIACIN, REDUCED IRON, THIAMINE MONONITRATE {VITAMIN B1}, RIBOFLAVIN {VITAMIN B2}, FOLIC ACID), CANOLA OIL, PALM OIL, SUGAR, SALT, LEAVENING (CALCIUM PHOSPHATE, BAKING SODA), HIGH FRUCTOSE CORN SYRUP, SOY LECITHIN, NATURAL FLAVOR.
Sodium 105mg.
You need lots of salt to keep folks eating them one after another.

My Crackers: 11.8 oz (less than a dollar)

For this recipe, you’ll need:

  • 1 cup flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 2 tablespoon shortening (you can use butter or Avocado oil)
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup cold water
  • Spices (Sometimes I add finely diced jalapenos or Chipotle Chili Seasonings)

Flour Tortillas: Average $3.00

Enriched Bleached Wheat Flour (Wheat Flour, Niacin, Reduced Iron, Thiamine Mononitrate, Riboflavin, Folic Acid), Water, Vegetable Shortening (Soybean Oil, Hydrogenated Soybean Oil), Sugar, Salt, Contains 2% or Less of: Leavening (Sodium Bicarbonate, Sodium Aluminum Sulfate, Corn Starch, Monocalcium Phosphate, and/or Sodium Acid Pyrophosphate, Calcium Sulfate), Calcium Propionate and Sorbic Acid and/or Potassium Sorbate(is a chemical additive) (Preservatives), Enzymes, Dough Conditioners (Fumaric Acid, Sodium Metabisulfite(It is used as a disinfectant, antioxidant, and preservative agent). and/or Mono- and Diglycerides).

Note: How are SEED oils made and why I never use them?
Seed oils are extracted from plants like corn, sunflowers, and soybeans by superheating them until their fatty acids "oxidize" in a process called "hydrogenation". The resulting oils are then processed with a petroleum-based solvent and smothered in a chemical cocktail to mask their awful color and smell. Industrial seed oils are highly processed oils extracted from soybeans, corn, rapeseed (canola), cottonseed, and sunflower and safflower seeds.

100% pure avocado oil is naturally refined, meaning no harsh chemicals are used to extract or refine the oil. The pure oil is stored in a tank at our refining facility where it is monitored, the temperature is dropped, and impurities are removed. This protects the quality and stability of the oil.

My flour Tortillas: (Under a dollar)
  • 3 C Flour
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp baking soda (mix 2 parts cream of tartar with one part baking soda for aluminum-free baking powder)
  • 1/3 C Oil, butter, or bacon grease ( I will be using Avocado Oil)
  • 1 C Warm water
