History of various salts 1. TABLE SALT

In this blog, I am just showing you the first of four types of salt. I have linked reputable companies who gave me this information.

First up Table Salt. This is the salt I grew up with. I never questioned any ingredient because I ate mostly whole foods. We grew our produce and hunted most of our meat. Food was cooked from scratch and salt and pepper were the only seasonings most cooked used in the 50's and 60's.

Iodine supplementation, primarily through the fortification of table salt, did not begin until the early 1920s. The fortification of salt with iodine is an effective, inexpensive, and stable route to ensuring adequate iodine intake. They also say the addition of iodine was to prevent hypothyroidism. I guess my Nana's excessive salt in her meals wasn't enough. To this day, I take a low dose of thyroid medication.

Below are articles on the history of salt and how salt was made. It's pretty interesting.
