The History of Salt 2.SEA/KOSHER AND HIMALAYAN SALT

Sea Salt and Kosher Salt:

After throwing out table salt most folks bought Sea Salt or Kosher SaltThere are several differences between kosher salt and sea salt, including how they’re harvested, their appearance, how they’re used and how much they cost. Kosher salt is harvested from underground salt deposits while sea salt is made by harvesting salt water and drying it to form crystals.

Sea salt is produced by evaporating salt water from oceans or lakes into crystals.

Kosher salt is a fairly large-grained, coarse salt that was originally used in the process of making meat kosher.

Here is the list of some of the significant salt mines where large amounts of salt are mined

  • Detroit Mine discovered in 1895
  • The Wieliczka Salt Mine, Poland
  • Khewra Salt Mine
  • Tundra Mine
  • Schacht Asse II
  • Windsor Salt Mine

I looked up the manufacturer of the Sea Salt I buy from Costco. Kirkland brand salt is manufactured in Australia and packaged in US. So I guess, it's fine with me.

Himalayan Salt:

Unlike other types of salt, Himalayan salt is only found in one place: the Khewra Salt Mine in Pakistan. Outside the culinary world, Himalayan salt is also used in baths to rejuvenate skin and put in lamps to purify the air.
